Sex Trafficking in the U.S. Know its Realities

We sometimes think that sex trafficking is something that only happens across the globe where foreign girls are being sold to slavery and prostitution; just because we hear it in the news all the time.

Believe it or not Sex trafficking still exist in the United States

But what about those girls that you see in the corner street, wearing skimpy clothes and high heels; don't you think they are victims as well? The truth is that sex trafficking in the United States is as much a reality as sex trafficking in Thailand or anywhere else.

The media has portrayed street prostitution in a somewhat nonchalant way. Prostitution is portrayed by media as something acceptable for the women who are victims of this crime.

The reality is far from the truth. These women and young girls who are victims of sex trafficking are left with no option because pimps and sex traffickers are actually controlling them. Victims enter street prostitution as early as 12 to 14 years old, but some are introduced to this cruel world as innocent as 9 years old.

Sex traffickers use various methods in keeping their victims from leaving the industry. Some of the common ones include isolation, minimized freedom, threats and intimidation, blackmailing, physical as well as sexual abuse. Another method used is pimps and sex traffickers hold these women on "debt-bondage". This basically means, the victim is not allowed to leave until she pays off her supposed "debt.

Usual "clients" are men from various socio-economic classes. Women who had a different ethnicity were sometimes isolated and are offered to men of the same ethnic group as they are.

The clients can range from 15 to 90 years old. Most of these men expected that the victim will do anything they request. Some of these clients would want to perform sexual acts without the use of condom and if the victims insisted, they resort to violence and abuse their victims.

These people are forced to perform labor or sexual acts against their own will and are forcibly or worse taken with consent. But the bottom line is that these people lose their human rights.
